Enhancing Odisha’s Tourism Sector: Key Proposals by JK Mohanty and HARO

Odisha, a state rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty, holds vast potential in tourism. To unlock this potential, JK Mohanty, the Lifetime Chairman of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Odisha (HARO), has submitted 17 comprehensive proposals to the Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, ahead of the state budget. These suggestions aim to elevate the stateโ€™s hospitality and tourism industry to global standards.

The proposals highlight that the hospitality sector contributes 6.5% to the GDP and creates 43 million jobs annually. However, with the right initiatives, the sector could achieve even greater milestones. Among the key recommendations are granting industry status to hotels, improving infrastructure, and revising GST rates to make Odisha more competitive. JK Mohanty also emphasized the importance of master planning, with a focus on road, rail, and air connectivity, especially for key tourist destinations.

Another significant suggestion is the establishment of a Tourism Development Board chaired by the Deputy Chief Minister. This board would ensure strategic oversight and implementation of tourism projects. Regular meetings of the State Tourism Promotion Council, better branding, and promotions at the international level were also recommended to attract investments and increase tourist footfall.

HARO also stressed the development of Western Odisha’s tourism potential and the need for a land bank dedicated to the hotel industry. These steps, combined with sustainable practices and global partnerships, could position Odisha as a leading tourist destination in India.

The Odisha government has a golden opportunity to transform the tourism landscape, creating employment and addressing unemployment in the state. With visionary leaders like JK Mohanty at the helm, the future of Odisha’s tourism sector looks promising.
